Tottenham’s Title Dream Is Probably Dead After Another Bloody Chelsea Battle But Just Try To Stop Ange Postecoglou Having A Crack, Mate

Tottenham Hotspur’s first real title bid in Premier League history ended at the end of the 2015/16 season on May 2 after a bloody 2-2 draw against Chelsea.
Mauricio Pochettino was at the time in charge of Spurs for what was later dubbed the ‘Battle of the Bridges’.
Strangely, no players were sent off by referee Mark Clattenburg that day, although at least six red cards would probably have been shown had this taken place in the VAR era.
Former Spurs boss Pochettino was on hand at Chelsea on Monday night as the two fierce London clubs engaged in another epic battle.
This time two red cards were shown.
Of course, Chelsea’s 4-1 victory did not officially end Tottenham’s latest title bid.
After all, Spurs are still only 1 point away from the top after 11 rounds.
But the events of November 6 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, at least for many spectators, will be enough evidence to confidently eliminate Ange Postecoglou’s team from the ever-shrinking list of realistic contenders for the title.
Manchester City’s rival.
But if this really was the day Tottenham’s short-lived title dream came to an end, it wasn’t by Pochettino, or even Jackson.
Amid almost unbelievable drama on the field on Monday, Spurs faced a brutal reality check.
After Romero was sent off, his center partner, Micky van de Van, limped off with a hamstring injury.
Van de Van was followed onto the field by James Maddison, seemingly another hamstring victim.
Tottenham’s first team have been dazzling in the first quarter of the season, but Postecoglou must now plan for Saturday’s trip to Wolves without three irreplaceable players.
Romero will return after a three-match suspension, but Van de Van and Maddison could be out for much longer.
Squad depth in the heart of Tottenham’s defense is a big issue.
This was highlighted by Eric Dier and Emerson Royal, who both played at centre-back in the final third of Monday’s match.
Before Monday, Dier had not played a single minute under Postecoglou, who are looking to sell him this summer.
Dier is too slow to be a solid centre-back option for Postecoglou, who demands his team play high.
However, Postecoglou has made it clear that he will not abandon his football philosophy, regardless of the circumstances.
If anyone thought he was lying about this, Monday proved them wrong.
Despite having nine men and a rusty Dier at the heart of the defence, Postecoglou’s Tottenham continued to press in the half-field.
That worked, for a while.
.
.
until it didn’t.
Scroll to continue Read more Chelsea repeatedly fell into Tottenham’s offside trap before all nine players almost leveled the score at 2-2 on three occasions.
Dier had a soft goal denied for offside, Rodrigo Bentancur missed a keeper, then Son Heung-min forced Robert Sanchez into a fine save.
