According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the 24-year-old forward Drew Peterson is joining the Boston Celtics on a two-way contract. Stretch four player Peterson, who stands 6’9″, has been playing for the NBA G-League’s Sioux Falls Skyforce this season. In 13 games, he has averaged 15.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists. With 4.5 attempts per game, Peterson’s three-point percentage is 40.7%.
Peterson is a USC rookie who was not drafted. Before moving to USC for two seasons, he attended Rice for one season. With 93 starts, Peterson made 96 appearances in college, averaging 12 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per contest. Notably, during his three-year career, he shot 38.7% from beyond the field.
Peterson will fill the spot left by Nathan Knight, who was waived by the Celtics on Tuesday (Dec. 12) and will spend most of his time with the Maine Celtics.
Peterson will provide the Celtics another forward who can fill in as a backup when needed thanks to his size and perimeter shooting skills. He will be able to play for the big club for up to 50 games as a two-way player, but unless the team decides to turn his contract into a full-time agreement later on, he will not be allowed to be on the Celtics postseason roster.
The potential of Peterson should excite Boston supporters. Everything went perfectly when Brad Stevens brought in an undrafted shooting forward who had previously worked out for the Miami Heat. He is now a vital member of the team’s rotation.
The Celtics now have all three of their two-way spots filled, with JD Davison and Neemias Queta occupying the other two slots. We’ve seen Queta participate in games throughout the season but have seldom seen Davison get his opportunity.
As such, it will be interesting to see how much playing time is afforded to Peterson between now and the end of the season and whether he can make the most of those opportunities when they’re given to him.
