INDIANA FEVER TRIUMPHS OVER NEW YORK LIBERTY, MAKING CAITLIN CLARK THE FIRST WNBA ROOKIE TO RECORD A TRIPLE-DOUBLE.
After an incredible debut season in the WNBA, Caitlin Clark’s performance was even more impressive as the Indiana Fever defeated the New York Liberty 83-78. The Fever overcame a late deficit to win their ninth game of the year, powered by 19 points, 13 assists, and 12 rebounds by Clark at the end of the game. In the meantime, without Napheesa Collier, the Minnesota Lynx defeated the Washington Mystics.
The Indiana Fever defeated the New York Liberty 83-78, making Caitlin Clark the first-ever WNBA rookie to record a triple-double.
The Fever overcame a seven-point deficit into the fourth quarter behind 19 points, 12 rebounds, and a season-high 13 assists from Clark.
Sabrina Ionescu scored 22 points for the Liberty, yet she was still her team’s leading scorer.
But Clark and the Fever had the better of the day, and she was proud of her teammates for hitting their shots.
“I’m just glad we prevailed,” she uttered. “I take a lot of pride in being able to do a lot of different things for this team.”13 assists obviously means that my teammates made 13 shots off of my passes, so props to them.”
Because WNBA games last eight minutes less than NBA games, triple-doubles are much more uncommon.
The Fever’s record now stands at 9–13 for the season, one game ahead of their matchup at Gainbridge Fieldhouse next week against the Washington Mystics.
Not a Collier NO ISSUE AS LYNX DEFEATS MYSTICS
The Minnesota Lynx defeated the Washington Mystics 74-67 to overcome the absence of three-time WNBA All-Star Napheesa Collier.
Few players on the team are able to average more points and rebounds than Collier (20 points per game on average)—a testament to her value to the Lynx.
In her absence, Courtney Williams and Kayla McBride both scored 17 points, with additional points coming from Cecilia Zandalasini and Bridget Carleton, who scored 13 and 10, respectively.
Ariel Atkins and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough both scored 15 points apiece to lead Washington in the game; the latter drained four 3-pointers.
With just twenty-five seconds separating Walker-Kimbrough’s two 3-pointers during Washington’s 13-2 run, it appeared as though the outcome may have been different.
They were now only three points behind the Lynx at 32-29 after this, and Hines-Allen’s two baskets made sure the two teams were even at 36-36.
Walker-Kimbrough helped Stefanie Dolson for a jump shot in the third quarter, giving Washington a 43-36 lead, and it appeared like they were about to pull off a much-needed victory after going on a seven-point run without a response.
After Carleton’s 3-pointer tied the score at 47-47, it appeared as though Minnesota was winning the game again. However, Zandalasini quickly responded with a three of her own to put the Lynx back up 47-50.
Melbourne’s two free throws gave them a 57-55 lead, but Washington held on.
Minnesota ultimately pulled away at 62-60 thanks to a jump jumper from Williams, and McBride closed off the scoring with the second of her two free throws to make the final score 74-67.
While the Mystics take on the Indiana Fever on Wednesday, the Lynx will look to carry on their winning streak when they play the Los Angeles Sparks on Tuesday night.
