  1. The owner of the Boston Celtics creates an NBC comedy about himself, his spouse, and their basketball-loving ex-husband.
  2. Wyc Grousbeck called his friend, Red Sox owner Tom Werner, who happens to be one of TV’s best producers, because he felt that his life could be a show.
  3. Collaboration Owner of the Boston Celtics Wyc Grousbeck knew exactly who to contact when he thought his life would make a great sitcom: His pal Tom Werner is a Red Sox owner and seasoned television personality who helped create big shows including “That ’70s Show,” “The Cosby Show,” and “Roseanne.”
  4. The outcome is “Extended Family,” which debuted on NBC on Saturday night (8 p.m. EST, after the football game). It stars Donald Faison (“Scrubs”), Jon Cryer (“Two and a Half Men”), and Abigail Spencer (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Suits”) in a romantic triangle that draws inspiration from the relationship that actually developed between Grousbeck, his new wife, and her longtime Celtics fan husband.
  5. “There are a million guys in New England you could be dating,” he added, glancing at her. Werner joined the three as an executive producer and gave them development advice for the show. “What should I tell my friends?”The subsequent antics play off Emilia Fazzalari and George Geyer’s choice to implement a nesting arrangement after their divorce, which keeps the kids in the family apartment while the parents move in and out. This arrangement eliminates the need for the kids to move around during custody changes.
  6. The pilot, which is based on a true tale in which Geyer was left in charge of his daughter’s goldfish “Googles” while she was at summer camp, features Jim Kearney (Cryer) saying, “The nest is someplace where Julia and I have tried to give our kids the false impression that nothing has changed.” When the fish dies, they choose to replace it with a replica, which leads to absurdity.
  7. According to Fazzalari and Geyer, their exceptionally cordial divorce was an effort to cause as little disruption as possible for their two kids.In a recent interview, Geyer stated, “We decided to get divorced and we decided that we should pay the price for that, not the kids.” There are two paths you can take after a divorce. You have two options: either make the most of it or decide to be awful. And we decided to take advantage of it.
  8. “Looks like we both met the man of our dreams,” remarks Jim’s ex-wife Julia Mariano (Spencer) when he approaches Celtics owner Trey Turner (Faison) about tickets in the pilot. In reality, however, Geyer—who was born and raised outside of Boston, attended Boston College, and brought up his children as ardent Boston sports fans while residing in New York—had more conflicting feelings.”It must sting, am I right?” he asked. “She starts dating the Celtics owner, and I’m a fan of the team? Not to add that I’m Irish, that I grew up in Boston, and that all of my Boston buddies have a tendency to be mean to people. You have no idea how sad I’ve made them feel, especially my wife.
  9. It’s not a documentary, according to Geyer. “However, there are some similarities in the three characters’ on-screen interactions.”While some stories draw inspiration from their personal experiences, the majority are developed in the writers’ room, where Geyer—who is primarily retired after working for Bloomberg LLP for thirty years—contributes twice a month. He added, “I even got one or two lines into the show.”Similar to the way Red Sox supporters offer lineups for their team, Werner said he gets approached frequently by people who think they have great ideas for TV shows. (He compared it to someone asking, “Why wasn’t that pitcher removed in the seventh inning?” “Everyone believes
  10. However, the idea for “Extended Family” captivated him when, while on holiday in Mexico with Grousbeck and Fazzalari, he heard her laughing and chatting to Geyer on the phone.”After I hang up, Tom says, ‘I thought you were going to talk to your ex-husband.'” “No, that was my ex-husband,” I respond. stated Fazzalari. ‘Let me tell you about this unusual circumstance,’ Wyc stated at that point. In my opinion, it’s a sitcom.Werner provided them with remarks on their attempt after sending them some sample treatments from the past. Executive producers Grousbeck, Fazzalari, and Geyer (who also founded the tequila firm Cincoro with NBA legend Michael Jordan) are engaged in the show’s casting, set design, and costumes.
  11. Mike O’Malley, a seasoned actor and writer who is also an avid follower of Boston sports, was brought on as the showrunner and creator.”You get excited when they call you to do something like this because you think you might get some good tickets,” said O’Malley, who co-starred in the television series “Survivor’s Remorse” alongside Werner and NBA player LeBron James. “But then you realize that I could become persona non grata if I mess this up.”Entertainer Lenny Clarke plays Jim’s father, lending his genuine Boston accent to the role. Rick Fox, a former Laker and Celtic with a few dozen acting credits, serves as the team’s general manager. The 13-episode series has been renewed, and it will premiere on Tuesday nights at 8:30 in a regular time slot.
  12. Using the Celtics name and other genuine NBA intellectual property is one method “Extended Family” maintains authenticity. An exterior view of the TD Garden, home of the Boston Celtics, and a scene in an opulent suite adorned with framed jerseys featuring Robert Parish’s No. 00, Ray Allen’s No. 20, and Kelly Olynyk?”If it was the Boston Bluebirds, the show wouldn’t be the same,” Grousbeck remarked. The NBA advised going for it.The pilot was recorded in the midst of Grousbeck and Fazzalari’s 2022 NBA Finals trip to California, when they were watching the Celtics play the Golden State Warriors, a team they would eventually lose to.
