J.T. Realmuto of the Phillies will undergo knee surgery and go on IL.

Star catcher J.T. Realmuto of the Philadelphia Phillies was put on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday and will require a month-long recuperation after having cartilage in his right knee removed during surgery.

On Wednesday, Realmuto will have a meniscectomy on his right knee. The All-Star break from July 15–18, according to manager Rob Thomson, may reduce the number of games Realmuto misses.

“I’m confident that J.T. will put in a lot of work,” Thomson stated prior to the start of a three-game series with the Red Sox.
Realmuto has been a consistent player for the National League-leading Phillies despite experiencing knee pain throughout the season. In 51 games, he has batted.261 with seven home runs and 20 RBIs. Due to right knee pain, he missed three straight games last month.

Along with outfielder Brandon Marsh (hamstring) and two-time All-Star shortstop Trea Turner (hamstring), Realmuto, 33, is the most recent Phillies player to be placed on the injured list.

Rafael Marchan, a catcher, was recalled by the Phillies from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday in a matching roster move. For Tuesday night’s game, Garrett Stubbs began at catcher and went 1 for 4, according to Thomson, who stated he and Marchan will share time.

The 25-year-old Marchan only played in one major league game during his previous major league stint with the Phillies this season. Throughout the season, he played in 13 games between Class A Clearwater and Lehigh Valley, batting.233 with two home runs and eight RBIs.

The Phillies (46-20) lead the second-place Atlanta Braves (35-29) by 10 games in the NL East after Tuesday’s 4-1 win over the Boston Red Sox and are half a game behind the New York Yankees (48-21) at the top of the major league standings.
