More than 30 days after the deadliest known shooting in Downtown Myrtle Beach history, the public still has no idea who shot whom, as police have yet to release body worn camera footage from the incident. One advocate is calling for the police officers who may have wounded tourists downtown in the shooting to at least be put on unpaid leave instead of paid leave while this investigation continues to drag out. Civil Rights advocate John C. Barnett said that he doesn’t know much about the Myrtle Beach Police Department, but he doesn’t like what he sees from the outside looking in. “If I saw what was happening here and I was a tourist, I would cancel my bookings and go to Florida instead,” Barnett said. “I have been here 11 times since April 26, and it hasn’t been for the beach.” Barnett represents four of the 11 surviving victims of an April 26 mass shooting on Ocean Boulevard. Barnett announced four “bullet points” for the Myrtle Beach Police Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division at a press conference in front of the Myrtle Beach Police Department Headquarters at 1101 North Oak Street, Myrtle Beach. Prock and Barnett are set to meet somewhere between June 5 to June 13, Barnett said during the press conference. The Sun News reached out to the Myrtle Beach Police Department and they have not responded prior to publication. His first message to Prock was May 7, Barnett said in a text message. SLED has told Barnett that the Division will finish its investigation into the incident by June 26, Barnett said. This is the second press conference Barnett has hosted regarding the April 26 mass shooting that killed one and injured 11. Barnett said he represents Serenity Chavis, 15, Zavian Hariston, 13 and two other people who were shot and have since pressed charges against the Myrtle Beach Police Department. “Zavian [Hariston] is 13-years old, not 23,” Barnett said. “Anytime he goes somewhere, anytime he throws a basketball or eats, he will feel that bullet in his arm.” Myrtle Beach Police have released little information following the mass shooting, stating they are waiting for SLED to finish its investigation into the “officer-involved shooting” before answering questions, The Sun News reported. The department has not shared the names of the three officers involved, the injuries of the 11 people or video footage from the night of the shooting.
