Ray Mears, the man who founded Woodlore, turns 50 today. To commemorate this unique occasion, the Woodlore team hired a skilled hand engraver to create a pair of personalized silver cufflinks featuring the iconic Woodlore emblem.
In 1983, British bushcraft specialist Ray Mears launched Woodlore, The School of Wilderness Bushcraft. Woodlore started with Ray teaching small groups of pupils the skills and knowledge he had spent most of his early life honing, paving the path for Bushcraft courses in the UK. Thanks to Ray’s drive and perseverance, Woodlore has expanded into a globally recognized and esteemed institution that provides in-depth instruction on a variety of survival and bushcraft topics.
“We can no longer deny the Earth’s yearly tilt away from the sun as Autumn matures—Winter is on its approach. This discourages many people from going on outdoor experiences; tents are stored in cupboards, trips are cut short, and people stay near their homes and fireplaces. But not for me, as I enjoy winter and the change of seasons. I once learned from Native American acquaintances that winter is the season of wisdom. I have been investigating that idea for more than thirty years now, embracing the winter and rushing north to the Arctic to feel northern Lapland’s bitterly cold and most difficult grip of the season. There, the nights are long and the sky is evil, obliterating my vital life warmth and swallowing it up in the peaceful eternity of space. So why do I love extreme winter?
